In fact, shell shocked countries attempting to absorb record numbers of immigrants have been browbeaten into setting aside healthy concerns around self-preservation -- replacing these with an exhaustive menu of newcomer complaints. In the case of the Chinese toddler, consider the focus in Canada's newspaper of record: The story "has stirred up a hive of mixed emotions for Canada's Chinese community. As English-language media detailed the video capturing the moments when two-year-old Wang Yue (or Yue Yue) of Foshan was run over by two separate cars and ignored by the 18 people who left her lying in the road, the Chinese-Canadian community struggled to reconcile their anxiety over moral norms in their homeland with disgust at the way the incident was depicted in the international press. Shock and dismay over the plight of the girl [who has since died] was tinged with chagrin that long-standing biases against Chinese culture have re-emerged in the Western media. Ray Chan, Toronto editor at Chinese-language newspaper Sing Tao Daily, said the story warrants only moderate coverage. The fact that the incident took place five days ago in an area well outside of its usual Canadian focus, coupled with tepid community interest, ensured the paper never treated it as a top story, he said. ['Shock and dismay over the plight of the girl' and at the same time only 'tepid community interest'? Make up your mind! Well, evidently Sing Tao's Big Boy] approach contrasted sharply with western news outlets, many of which gave the story top billing and prominently displayed photographs extracted from the surveillance video capturing the hit-and-run. Victor Wong, executive director of the Chinese Canadian National Council, said the English media treatment plays to a long-standing tradition of portraying China as a backwards and irresponsible nation. ...'It's almost like the old Cold War stories about China. They're not civilized, they're not ready for Prime Time,' Mr. Wong said. 'There's that kind of holdover from the Red China days, and we still see this in our North American news outlets today.'" (Globe and Mail, October 19, 2011) Got that? The problem is not callous indifference to a dying child, it is the Western media's callous indifference to Chinese sensibilities. Just to confirm stereotype-ridden tendencies, the Western media was back at it a week later: A truck "driver ran over a five-year-old boy – and then reversed over him to make sure he was dead in an apparent attempt to avoid footing hospital bills for the child. The sickening incident happened in Luzhou, western China, when driver Ao Yong hit Xiong Maoke as he left home to walk to school. Witness Zhang Shifen said: 'I saw the truck move back a little and then move forward again. Xiong became wrapped up in the wheel and the truck continued forward another ten yards.' The tragedy comes just a week after two-year-old Yue Yue was knocked down by two vehicles on a busy market street. ... In this latest incident passers-by said the lorry driver jumped from his cab after hitting the boy. They claimed Yong then asked: 'How much shall I pay?' Police said Yong, a 35-year-old lorry driver from Luxian, argued with the boy’s family about the size of the damages for seven hours. ... Handing over compensation if an accident victim dies is seen by many Chinese as cheaper than paying for lengthy hospital treatment."
